The small community 35 kilometres south of Berlin is just south of Schönefeld Airport, in a corner of Brandenburg that is missed by many that arrive at the airport and head straight for the wild German capital City. But the region of the Dahme-Spreewald district deserves attention, since here one finds super-modern companies and technical universities in stark contrast to the natural beauty of the Dahme River and the lake Zeuthener See. Education and science meet relaxation and leisure in a unique setting that is worth exploring. Zeuthen is home to tree-lined residential streets and an old town centre, to boat marinas and hiking and cycling paths that make being active in the outdoors easy and fun. With the neighbouring community of Wildau, which is home to numerous industrial parks, the Technical College of Wildau, and the A10 Center shopping paradise, education and entertainment also are taken care of in the best possible way.
Located on the border of Brandenburg and Berlin, Zeuthen boasts a lovely spot in the Dahme River and the lake Zeuthener See. Thanks to the city train, it is well-connected to Berlin, whose busy Potsdamer Platz is merely a 45-minute ride away. Regular bus and train services easily take you to Königswusterhausen, and Schönefeld Airport has its own busline.
The DESY, the German Electron Synchrotron, is based in the facilities of the former High-Energy Physics Institute, which was part of the Academy of Sciences of the German Democratic Republic until 1992. Nowadays, the institute employs about 200 people and is also frequented by students from the nearby located Technical College in Wildau. The local fishermen that work the weirs and nets on the waterways are the complete opposite of the high-speed particles, yet ensure regional prosperity as well.
Arts, exhibitions, and culture play a large role in the small town, which together with 4 other communities in the south of Berlin has founded the Kulturwerk, an association that regularily organizes guided tours, concerts, exhibitions, and festivals in the area. Zeuthen is the host of the annual Fischerfest (Fisher Fest) on Pentecost, where regionalclubs and traders present themselves.
Thanks to the easy access to the water, boating, sailing, fishing, and swimming are some of the most popular leisure activities here. By city train, Berlin and Potsdam are only a short ride away, and offer anything from museums to galleries to shopping and sightseeing. When you go even further south, you find yourself in the amazing landscapes of the northern Spreewald. Those that enjoy an adrenalin kick every once in a while should make an appointment at the Lufthansa Flight Training Centre (10 km), where you can be a pilot for a day.
