Münden) is one of those places that begs to be ‘discovered’ rather than visited, because when you first arrive in the town centre, for a split second you’ll think you’ve been transported to the past. The distinctive red roofs appear first, glowing in the valley. Then you will discover the beautifully preserved detail on the medieval houses, which are lined up against cobbled stone streets. At the edge of the town lie the remains of a 12th century wall, and the Old Werrabrücke bridge, which is one of the oldest stone bridges in Germany. Hann. Münden is celebrated for its living historical significance, and stunning natural surroundings where the Fulda and Werra rivers meet.
You can’t get much more central than Hannoversch Münden–the town is located in the heart of Germany, in the region of Lower Saxony. The nearest major city is Hanover, around 140 km away to the north, while Leipzig lies 230 km to the east, and Dortmund is 190 km to the west.
Preservation is key to the economy and legacy of Hannoversch Münden. Most of the town centre buildings are more than 600 years old and still used on a daily basis, so construction and renovation services are big business here. Tourism is another offshoot of the historical town, as people come to see the old town for themselves, and explore the fast flowing rivers and the countryside nearby.
Old German traditions live on in Hannoversch Münden. The town centre is full of traditional German bakeries and cafes where you can munch on a pastry and watch the world go by. Look out for Doctor Eisenbart, who pops out of the Town Hall at 1.30 pm every day between May and October, to cure the ailments of the local population.
Hann. Münden locals sometimes refer to it as the ‘Town of Three Rivers’–as well as the Fulda and the Werra, the town sits at the mouth of the Weser. The confluence of these three rivers creates some fast flowing waters, which are perfect for high-adrenaline rafting or canoeing.
