The city continues to have a strong aviation connection, despite shutdowns after the two world wars. This university city was initially established from the city of Buchhorn in 1811 during the Napoleonic Wars as part of the Kingdom of Württemberg and named after the king. It became a free port and transshipment point, especially to trade with Switzerland. The town was incorporated into Germany after the Franco-Prussian War. The Zeppelin University, a private university that confers PhDs, has one of the best-ranked Cultural and Communication Management programs in German speaking countries.
Located on the northern shore of the Bodensee (Lake Constance) in Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany near the borders of Austria and Switzerland, this city is easy to get to with its own airport offering daily international connections. There is also car ferry service to Romanshorn in Switzerland and other cities along the lake, as well as a regular train service from the city's station.
