This area became part of the Roman expansions in the 2nd century BC, solidifying it as an important place. Soon marble queries were found, and after the Medici family got control, a road was built and used for trade of such resources. Several settlements started popping up in the 17th century as more and more people called this part of Italy home. A fort to defend the marble was built in 1788 and commissioned by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo I of Lorena. The village that developed around this fort is what became the city as we know it today. Starting out as a resort for the Agnelli family it is now a popular beach destination for families and couples from all over the world. The 8, 000 residents enjoy a steady stream of newcomers and a quiet and safe beach for them to spend their summer at.

Location: Comune in the province of Lucca

This old fort town is located in northern Tuscany in the province of Lucca. On the western coast of the country, the city offers a secluded and calm beach as compared to the busy, rocky beaches that cover the rest of the area. It is between two cities, Marina di Ronci and Marina di Pietrasanta, in an area known as Versilia. The town of Viaraggio, another popular resort town, is only a few kilometers to the south of that.

Culture: Remnants of the Roman Empire

In ancient times, Forte dei Marmi was the main marble deposit area, meaning that even when there were no residents, a warehouse and wharf were necessary for the transport of materials. The original warehouse's remains still sit where it was in 1618 as well as the wharf offering a unique look into the past. The fort that protected the marble query during the Roman Empire, Forte Lorraine, is located in the center of town and offers a look at architecture in the 17th and 18th centuries. It now serves as a museum that features materials relevant to local history.
