Xi’an is one of China’s most ancient cities. Its rich heritage is evident in its fascinating assortment of traditional buildings throughout the town. Today, it thrives on an exceptionally successful industrial sector and an increasing focus on software technology. The city also has a modern core, with many fine hotels located around Xi’an. Anyone interested in China’s history and culture will enjoy exploring its range of monuments and ancient quarters.
In the country with the world’s oldest recorded history, Xi’an is one of the first cities that comes to mind when thinking about ancient metropolises. It is the oldest of the nation’s four historical capitals, having served as the political centre for numerous dynasties. Its downtown area is surrounded by a beautiful city wall, within which you'll find the city’s main businesses. Around Xi’an you’ll also find a wealth of traditional temples and museums. Its Muslim Quarter is a vibrant shopping area that is home to both the country’s first mosque as well as a Taoist temple. It’s also full of great restaurants and food stalls.
Manufacturing has long been a cornerstone of Xi’an’s output, especially in the electronics, machinery and aerospace sectors. Many global corporations are based in Xi’an, such as Coca-Cola and Mitsubishi. With so many national monuments, such as the Terracotta Army, located here, its tourism sector is reliably healthy. Tens of millions of domestic travellers alone visit Xi’an every year. The Qujiang International Conference & Exhibition Center to the south of the city centre welcomes a huge array of business forums and public expos.
Visitors to the city would be hard-pressed not to take in some of the city’s history on their visit. Every street feels full of cultural interest. The city wall itself and the neatly gridded streets of the historic centre are particularly noteworthy. The Wolong Temple and Bell Tower are right in the middle of town and should be seen even if you’ve only got a little free time away from your Xi’an hotel. For shopping and eating, the Muslim Quarter offers a different side of the city’s culture. To try Xi’an’s signature dish, ask for yangrou paomo, a mutton soup served with tasty flatbread.
