Its harbour is a major trading port in the region, and many are drawn to the city’s historical and cultural sites. Baku’s business district features a unique complex of distinct flame-shaped skyscrapers, while its Old City features well-preserved medieval constructions. The driving force of the city’s economy is oil exports, and booking a hotel in Baku additionally allows visitors to enjoy its fine cuisine and culture.
The city’s position at the crossroads of Europe and Asia makes it a popular place to do business in the Caucasus region. In recent years, it’s been the host of several global cultural and sporting events. It also remains a very popular destination for holidaymakers. The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan is the city’s biggest corporation and has its own skyscraper, the SOCAR Tower. Engineering, IT, science and healthcare are other large industries in Baku. The Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre, which hosts many national cultural forums, was designed by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid and is worth visiting if only for its unique appearance.
The walled Old City offers a glimpse into the city’s fascinating history. Book a walking tour or wander the streets yourself to appreciate the ancient architecture, before stopping for a bite to eat at a traditional Azerbaijani restaurant. The Palace of the Shirvanshahs and Maiden Tower within the Old City are collectively classed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are not to be missed. Look out for a drawing of the Old City on the 10 manat bank note. Azerbaijani cuisine includes the delightful sheshryanch plov, ‘six-colour eggs’, and Dushbara, lamb dumplings with mint. Sahil Bar & Restaurant on Seaside Boulevard and ART Garden in the Old City are two excellent examples of local restaurants.
