Hallenberg is located in the Hochsauerland district of North-Rhine Westphalia. The town is situated in the Rothaar Mountains, a low mountain range, which borders North-Rhine Westphalia and Hesse. The area is heavily forested and sparsely populated. It is easily accessible by road. Cologne and Dortmund are only one hour away and Frankfurt 2 hours away.

There is a restaurant and observatory point at the top. Balve Cave to the west of the town is one of the largest prehistoric caves in Europe. The nearby Sorpe reservoir affords the opportunity to try some adrenaline-fuelled activities ranging from scuba diving, rowing, yachting and wind surfing. The bobsleigh track in nearby Winterberg is well-known throughout Germany and the skiing routes in the area prove very popular in winter.
