It sits on Lake Chiemsee, the largest lake in Bavaria, and acts as the gateway for activities on the lake and in the area, including enjoying the amazing views of the Chiemgau region and the Bavarian Alps. It is also features the only Kneipp Health Cure Centre in Upper Bavaria. The area provides the ideal climactic conditions for healing. The town has a long history, and was founded in the mid-12th century. When the railway was built, visitors began to flock to the town to enjoy the area, especially once the King's Castle at Herrenchiemsee was opened to the general public in 1886.
