Bad Doberan - A historic German bathing resort
Though Bad Doberan is a relatively small town, it is quite well known throughout Germany as a popular bathing resort, due to its beautiful coastal location and historic importance. It has also been the site of several important events over the years, including the 2007 G8 Summit. The city dates back to 1177, when Cistercian monks founded a monastery here, but has a modern-day reputation for its healing spas after several clinics opened in the late 20th century. With the famous spa resorts Kühlungsborn and Rostock-Warnemünde just around the corner, it offers a wonderful starting point to explore the East German coast along the Baltic Sea, a true holidaymaker’s paradise.
Location: On the Baltic coast
The small town of Bad Doberan is located on the north-east coast of Germany in the district of Rostock. Bad Doberan is divided into a historic town centre and several outlying rural districts. It is situated in a naturally beautiful area, as the town centre is only six kilometres from the Baltic Sea, and the town itself is nestled between beech tree forests. Bad Doberan’s proximity to the sea has helped it develop a reputation as a bathing resort, especially the district of Heiligendamm, located right on the Baltic cliff line.
