Plau am See – Enjoy Wonderful Views and Sail Away in Plau Lake
Plau am See is a health and well-being spa resort, sparkling with flair and delighting visitors with sophisticated hospitality. Located directly on the banks of the Müritz-Elde waterway, the town is heavily influenced by the proximity to the water and by its medieval centre. Numerous historical buildings and battered ramparts recall the Slavic settlements of Obotrites that formed the foundations of the first village as early as 1235. The old town is still dominated by the half-timbered and brick houses in the farming community of the time, together with its three notable towers–the castle tower, the bell tower, and the lighthouse—all of which offer fantastic views of the town, the countryside, and the lake.
Location: On the western shore of Lake Plau
Plau am See is in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It is the western gateway to the region of Müritz-Mecklenburg Lake District. The town is situated 28 km east of Parchim, and 29 km west of Waren, and can be easily reached by a network of roads.

Culture: A model agricultural village
Visible from all directions, the 13th century St. Mary's Church is built in the Westphalian style that presents transition from Romanesque to Gothic style. Particularly valuable art treasures of the church are the three chandeliers, and the baptismal font carved in the sacristy. The Plau City Hall was built in 1888 in the Dutch Renaissance style by the government architect Dreyer. The castle has 3-metre thick walls and an 11-metre deep dungeon. The historic art museum in the castle courtyard presents the former trade and industry of Plau. Here, you will find historical printing and typesetting machines in functional state.

Activities: Panoramic town views and relaxing water activities
Walks in the narrow alleyways of the old town with the lovingly and lavishly restored half-timbered houses reveal their long history to the attentive visitor. Strolling along the Elde promenade to the ship lock with the "chicken ladder" and past the lift bridge that allows boats on the channel below to pass through, you arrive at the lookout tower surveying the transition route to Plau Lake. If you have the energy, climb the 120 steps of the church tower and you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the town’s numerous villas and old country houses in the Seeluster bay. For the adventurous type, ambling in the Plauer Stadtwald forest or sailing in Lake Plau provides an invigorating escape from everyday life.
