Santiago de Chile (known locally as simply ‘Santiago’) is a thriving and modern city, which has undergone some major changes in the past few years. Once a sleepy agricultural centre, it is now one of the most exciting cities in South America, with several universities, a growing financial district and a wealth of bars, clubs, cafes and restaurants. If the buzz of city life gets too much for you, simply head for the beach, or hit the slopes in one of the many ski resorts of the Andes. On the other side of the mountains lies the famous Mendoza wine-producing region of Argentina, where many Chileans travel for a brief respite or a weekend vacation.
Location: Chile–between the mountains and the sea
Santiago de Chile is a vast metropolis, which sits right smack in the middle of Chile. It is just 100 km from the Pacific coast, with its sandy, untouched beaches and excellent water sports facilities. Around 100 km in the other direction lie the Andes Mountains, where dozens of ski resorts cater to the winter tourists. Santiago is served by an international airport and a network of excellent roads, which connect the city with neighbouring Argentina.
Business: Chile’s commercial hub
Santiago de Chile is the economic and political capital of the country, and the centre of all the major industries of Chile. The country’s status as an emerging market has led to increased investment in recent years, and the growth of a major financial sector in the city centre.
Culture: Discover the diversity of Chilean culture
Chile has a rich and diverse culture, which is evident across the city of Santiago. The colonial architecture harks back to the days of Spanish settlement, while the famous Inca Trail runs through the areas of the city and nearby Valparaiso.
