Hockenheim – Agricultural City Turned to Motor Racing
Hockenheim is best known for being home to the famous Hockenheimring, a racing course for motor racing that has hosted over 30 Formula One German Grand Prix. The town has a long and rich history, with the earliest known settlement of the area dating to Roman legions in the 1st century, although not much is known about the town until the Middle Ages. For much of its existence, it was an important agricultural center, producing hops, tobacco, and asparagus during various times in its history. It also is surrounded by beautiful natural landscape, much of which is now a protected area. Visitors may come for the racing, but they are pleased to find a charming town with many other attractions.
Location: Motor City in Northwestern Baden-Wurttemberg
This motor racing town is located in the northwestern part of Baden-Wurttemberg in the upper Rhine Valley. It is divided by the Kraichbach brook, which flows into the Rhine. The town is easy to access, as it is connected to the A6, A5 and A61 motorways. There is also train service from Karlsruhe and Mannheim, with a shuttle bus to the Hockenheimring during events.

Culture: Museums and Architectural Beauties
The Hockenheimring not only hosts motor races, but there is also a museum that has over 200 exhibits of historical motorcycles and engines. There are other important local museums, including one for tobacco cultivation, which is the first of its kind in the state. However, the biggest landmark in town is the art nouveau water tower. There are also churches that have architectural significance in town, including the Neo-baroque protestant town church, the Art Nouveau Catholic church, and the historical Catholic Church that has a late Gothic choir tower.

Activities: Walk Among Endangered Animals and Plants
One of the biggest draws to the area is the Hockenheimring, which was constructed in the early 1930s as a motorcycle-racing ring. Today, it hosts the Formula One Grand Prix, and has done so over 30 times since 1970, as well as motorcycle races such as the International German Motorbike Championships. Since 2007, the Formula One races alternate between the Hockenheimring and the Nurburgring every year. However, it is not the only draw to the town. The Hockenheimer Rheinbogen is a large meander area of the Rhine that is under natural protection that features biologically diverse wetlands with endangered plants and animals.
