Newquay - A vibrant town with a fine selection of beaches
Wide expanses of sandy beaches and hidden coves await you in Newquay the surf capital of the UK. Fistral Beach is probably the most recognisable of Newquay's beaches with its west facing Atlantic shoreline that provides perfect waves for the international surfing competitions that take place here. The harbour is a more relaxed area, which has remained relatively unchanged in over 100 years. You can still sit and watch as the small fishing boats come and go with their daily catch, which graces many a Newquay restaurant’s menu, and many chefs are fiercely proud of their seafood dishes. Local produce is king when it comes to the dining experience and along the sea front, you can enjoy a view that is as wonderful as the food.
Location: Surprisingly accessible by road, rail and air
In the far south-west of England, Newquay has an excellent mainline rail link to Bristol, Birmingham, London and Manchester on a daily basis. The A392 connects Newquay to the A30 and A39 roads to Barnstaple 100 kilometres to the north and Plymouth 80 kilometres to the east. Newquay is the only Cornish resort with its own International Airport within 10 kilometres and daily flights to Gatwick are on offer all year round with seasonal flights to mainland Europe between May and July.

Culture: Find inspiration in nature
The local artists are spoilt for choice when it comes to scenic locations and you can see their work at the many small art galleries in and around the town where a diverse selection of watercolour and acrylic paintings are displayed alongside driftwood sculptures and other objects d'art. Newquay and its surrounding coastline have a strong creative influence on many artists, and you can even join in and take an arts class with one of the local artists and perhaps create your own masterpiece.
Activities: Take to the waves at any time of year
Being the home of surfing in the UK it is no surprise to see people learning to surf up and down the 15 beaches of Newquay. Why not join in for a taster session, don a wetsuit, and practice your skills under the guidance of an expert. With the proper training on dry land, you will be amazed at how soon you will be up and standing on that surfboard, but there is no guarantee just how long you will be upright. Lessons are available all year round and one of the best beaches for the advanced surfer is Fistral Beach, which holds the Annual International Surf Championships.
