Once you are ready to head out of town to check out the surrounding area, you will find no shortage of things to do. Culture: A Quiet Seaside Slice of Europe
Norden is one of the region’s oldest cities, with a heritage stretching back over 750 years. The city center is built with pedestrians in mind, and a scenic stroll amongst the late Gothic and Renaissance architecture can be quite peaceful and inspiring. The Market Square hosts the historic Old Town Hall, and you will not want to skip the St. Ludgeri church–the largest of its kind in Easy Friesland–built in the Romanesque tradition.
Activities: Escape to the Great Outdoors
There are plenty of more active options for recreation in Norden–most taking advantage of the sea, with swimming, fishing, and windsurfing leading in popularity. Seaside campsites offer a more rustic escape into nature for backpackers and families alike, and nature trails let hikers and cyclers discover the North Sea coast for themselves. When in Frisia, you will notice that tea ceremonies are part of everyday life. Enjoy a cup of strong black tea with the typical lumps of sugar, the so-called Kluntje, and a drop of fresh sweet cream, which, when poured correctly over the back of the spoon, billows up in lovely clouds in your china cup. The East-Frisian Tea Museum in Norden introduces the visitor into the history of tea trade and tea consumption in the region, and showcases china from all over the world. At the end of your visit, you are spoiled with a tea ceremony and a cup of Assam. With the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park at the doorstep, habitat of seals amongst others, you find the seal refuge station Seehundstation Norddeich in the town, where you can learn all about orphaned grey seal and harbor seal babies, and how they are lovingly pampered by the staff until they are released back into the national park.
