Even without the sulphuric springs, Sankt Peter-Ording is a beautiful place by most standards. Overlooking the North Sea, it boasts some of the most pristine sandy beaches in Germany, and has some of the country’s most spectacular scenery. The sand dunes fringe the long flat beaches, and just beyond them are the distinctive shorefront houses, which are built on stilts as protection from the sea and the sand. Since the town’s sulphur spring was discovered in 1953, it has seen its popularity continue to rise, as visitors come from Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, and further afield to take the waters and enjoy the various spa facilities that Sankt Peter-Ording has to offer.
Location: South of the North Sea
Sankt Peter-Ording stretches along 12 km of white sandy beaches, in the German Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein in the north of the country, looking out over the southern waters of the North Sea on the Eiderstedt peninsula. It is just 100 km south of the Danish border, and 140 km north of Hamburg, where the nearest airport is located.
Business: A health and wellness hub
As a result of the natural sulphuric springs in the town, Sankt Peter-Ording has become known as a centre of wellness and health in the north of Germany. There are a multitude of spa facilities and health clubs in the town, specialising in natural treatments using locally sourced salt, algae, mud, and sand. The town’s reputation as a seaside spa attracts visitors thorough the year, making tourism a growing industry.
Culture: At one with nature
There is a strong emphasis on nature and wildlife in Sankt Peter-Ording. The coast is a part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, and the Westküstenpark is home to more than 100 different species of indigenous animals, including a number of endangered species. For more on the history and culture of the town and its surroundings, the Museum der Landschaft (Museum of the Landscape) in Eiderstedt is worth a visit.
Activities: Explore the ever-changing coastline
Much of the coastline of Sankt Peter-Ording is a protected area, but guided tours and hikes are available for anyone seeking to catch a glimpse of the rare birds, seals, and other animals living there. There are more than 120 km of coastal trails that are suitable for cyclists and hikers, and offer an unmatched view of this diverse and continually changing landscape.
