Sousse – Capital of the Sousse Governorate
The city was first founded in the 11th century BC by Phoenicians and soon allied itself with Rome to become a peaceful place for the Roman army for seven centuries. Then, the Arabs conquered the area in the 7th century BC giving the city many Islamic influences even today. Eventually European countries came to take over throughout the 12th century. However, the Arabs and their fortifications seemed to have the most influence over this city. There are currently more than 200, 000 residents living here in this historical city steeped in tradition, and tourists can enjoy a look into the past as well as have fun in the sun on one of the many beaches.
Location: South of the Capital
Sousse is a Tunisian city that is nearly 150 kilometers south of the capital, Tunis. It is located in the central east portion of the country with part of the Mediterranean Sea on its coast. The hit semi-arid climate here makes temperatures generally hot year round, which is why it is a great place to get away in the winter when you’re looking to escape cold, dry weather.

Currently, tourism is the predominant industry that makes up the local economy. Visitors come from all over to experience the old world feel and the warm beaches. However, this area is also known for a few other important industries. A large olive grove has provided olive oil for centuries and has been a historical way to earn income. Processed foods as well as transport equipment are also big money makers here.
Culture: History and Traditional Architecture
In the heart of Sousse you will find a plethora of amazing historical and cultural sites. The Great Mosque dates back to 850, and offers a simple and tranquil place for prayer and reflection still to this day. The Dar Esid now the Traditional Tunisian House is a museum located within the old city walls, which was once home to a prominent family in local society. It even has a tower that you can use to see the entire city.
Activities: Water, Leisure, and Shopping
Whether you're traveling alone or with a whole family, there are plenty of things to do for everyone.
