HRS is thrilled to invite hotel partners to the new Emissions Compensation Program!
As sustainability continues to be a driving force in the hospitality industry, we understand the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. But unavoidable emissions also need to be managed. By joining the Emissions Compensation Program, hotels are taking a significant step and demonstrating their dedication to corporate responsibility.
Governments, regulatory bodies, and industry standards increasingly require companies to meet specific sustainability targets, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By offering emissions reduction and compensation options, HRS supports both hotel partners and customers in achieving their sustainability objectives by enabling them to compensate for their carbon emissions. This helps customers fulfill their environmental obligations and remain compliant with relevant regulations.
Consumer awareness and concern for the environment have grown significantly in recent years. Travelers and corporate clients increasingly expect businesses to take responsibility for their environmental impact. By participating in the program, hotel partners will address the travelers’ and corporates’ expectations by reducing and compensating emissions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Emissions Compensation Program
Emissions compensation involves acting to counterbalance the environmental impact of carbon emissions produced through various activities. In this program, we’re partnering with selected expert companies to offer Green Stay hotels verified carbon compensation projects as a way to account for unavoidable emissions. This initiative supports both hotels and corporates on their net zero journey.
The initial average price for this program is 15 Euros per metric ton of CO2 (therefore, per carbon credit), but market conditions may vary, and prices could increase over time. To calculate the price of compensation per room night, use your Green Stay CO2 footprint and the compensation cost (e.g. 10kg of CO2 / 1000 x 15,00 = 0,15 per room night).
HRS offers the Emissions Compensation Program to the hotels partners that qualify according to their performance in the Green Stay Initiative, meaning the program is only available to those hotels able to demonstrate energy efficiency and measures to reduce emissions as much as possible.
Therefore, the requisites are: 1) being part of the Green Stay Initiative in the Advanced or Professional level and 2) Achieving a Green Stay Index of A or B.
By participating in Green Stay, hotels already have 31% higher chance of adoption into corporate programs and 43% estimated cumulative bookings increase for 2023. By receiving a special badge indicating your involvement in the CO2 Emissions Compensation Program, your hotel will gain even more visibility through our Recommendation Engine by demonstrating a commitment to environmental responsibility, potentially increasing adoption and bookings even further.
HRS will procure compensation projects based on the room night production of participating hotels, which will receive monthly invoices based on the emissions compensation fee, detailing the amount and purpose of the charge.
Upon payment, HRS will share emissions compensation certificates with the hotel partners. These certificates serve as a record of the hotel’s contribution to verified carbon compensation projects, which can be used for sustainability reporting purposes.
Certainly! We’re happy to provide additional information about the projects selected for this program. Here on this page you can find the projects we are currently working with. Any changes or new additions will be made available there.
Hotels are free to opt out of the program at any time. However, please note that by doing so, you will no longer have access to the benefits associated with participation, including the special badge and visibility to corporate customers.
